Vanderbilt held scoreless in loss to NC State

The Vanderbilt offense had no answers against North Carolina State on Monday night.

North Carolina State starter Sam Highfill and closer Evan Justice handcuffed the Commodores in a 1-0 win in the second round of the College World Series.

The duo limited the Commodores to two singles and five total base runners.

The Commodores had only eight at-bats with a runner on base and two at-bats with runners in scoring position. Only one runner reached third base all night.

Vanderbilt (46-16) suffered its shutout since 7-0 loss at Texas AM on March 17, 2019.

Southeastern 14's Game Pick for Vanderbilt vs. Stanford

This is similar to Vanderbilt's first game against Arizona. It's a good pitching staff against a good offense.

The Commodores don't have Kumar Rocker or Jack Leiter on the mound, but there are enough talented arms beyond those two to find a path to victory. Stanford's dropoff after its top two pitchers seems to be more significant.

Of course, Vanderbilt's hitting struggles are a concern. The Commodores simply have to pick it up in that area, as they're a better hitting team than they've shown.

If the pitching is the difference, Vanderbilt has more depth. That could prove to be the difference in game three for both teams.

Pick: Vanderbilt
