Missouri earns seventh straight win with 15-7 victory over Texas Southern

The Missouri Tigers (9-2, Southeastern Conference) snagged their 7th win in a row as they beatTexas Southern University (7-6, Southwestern Athletic Conference) by a score of 15-7 at Taylor Stadium in Columbia, Mo., on Sunday afternoon.

Texas Southern came out swinging as they grabbed an early lead in the top of the first inning off of a sacrifice fly and subsequent errant throw. They grabbed some insurance runs to go up 6-0 in the third off a single from Daalen Adderley and a three-run bomb off the bat of Alexander Olivo. After a rough first three innings for Missouri, a comeback looked bleak.

However, Missouri came out strong in the fourth. The inning began with a single from designated hitter Jackson Lovich. Trevor Austin then grounded into a fielder’s choice but swiped second base. After a walk and an HBP, Ty Wilmsmeyer stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left field. Cam Chick then took a walk and Justin Colon ripped a single up the middle, bringing the game to a score of 6-4. But the Tigers weren’t done.

Luke Mann, a recent home run machine, cranked one out of the park grabbing another three runs for Missouri and put them on top 7-6. He now has a seven-game hit streak and has hit four home runs in his last five games. He is now two dingers away from seventh place on Missouri’s all-time home run leaderboard.

Following Mann’s theatrics, Lovich hit a two-run home run giving his team a bigger lead. All in all, the Tigers scored nine runs in the fourth inning, their most in an inning this season. Lovich continued his game from the plate as he hit a double to center field in the sixth, giving him another two RBI’s.

The Tigers piled on some more insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings bringing the game to a 15-7 score. These runs were highlighted by a double from Austin, a Colon sac fly, and a pinch-hit homer from sophomore Cam Careswell.

Great Day for Lovich

Going 3-for-5 on the day, Lovich showed why he should be considered for the lineup more often. 

In his first start of the season, the freshman hit an RBI double and cranked a two-run homerun. It was his first collegiate home run. The designated hitter showed up big time for Missouri as he finished the game with four RBI’s, three hits, a walk, and a stolen base. 

Additionally, his at-bat in the fourth helped start the momentum for Missouri’s big inning.

Missouri’s Pitching

While the pitching started off a bit rocky, the Tigers were able to get into a groove and shut down Texas Southern. Today’s starter, Rorik Maltrud, seemed to have minimal control over his fastball at the start of the game but was eventually able to strike out five. He pitched a total of four innings, with two of those being scoreless.

Entering the game in relief, Austin Troesser received the win. In his three innings, he only gave up one run. He also struck out two. Once again, Daniel Wissler dominated in his relief appearance. He threw a solid two innings, only giving up one hit and striking out four. 

In total, Missouri struck out 11 of the batters they faced, their most since February 26th at Florida International.

In the Future

Keeping up the momentum, Missouri looks to continue their win streak against Western Illinois on Tuesday. 

After this single-game series, they will have another eight games at home, including their SEC opener against Tennessee.
