Tuesday SEC baseball recaps

TEXAS A&M, LSU POST MIDWEEK SHUTOUTS:

Texas A&M and LSU both posted midweek shutouts on Tuesday. Texas A&M recorded its SEC-leading sixth shutout with a 4-0 win over Texas State. LSU posted its fifth shutout with a 7-0 win over Grambling.

Freshman Jonathan Childress and junior Chris Weber combined on the five-hit shutout. Childress tossed five scoreless innings and allowed four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Weber allowed one hit and struck out five for his first save.

Left fielder Austin Bost belted a two-run home run in the first inning for the Aggies.

LSU had eight pitchers combine on a five-hit shutout in the win over Grambling. Senior right-hander Ma’Khail Hilliard started the game and tossed three scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the win. LSU combined for 12 strikeouts.

Shortstop Jordan Thompson and left fielder Brady Drost both homered in the win.

LSU improved to 10-0 in midweek games this season.

AROUND THE SEC:

Alabama recorded seven extra base hits, including six doubles, in a 9-3 win over UAB at Regions Park in Birmingham. The Crimson Tide scored in each of the first four innings and salted the game away with three runs in the eighth inning. Centerfielder Caden Rose went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one double, one home run and two RBIs.

Georgia dropped a 7-5 decision to rival Georgia Tech at Foley Field. Tech scored three runs in the first inning and lead 4-0 in the third inning before the Bulldogs mounted a comeback. Third baseman Parks Harber drove in three runs. First baseman Chaney Rogers had two hits, including a double and triple.

Kentucky overcame a four-run deficit to defeat Eastern Kentucky 7-6 in Lexington. The Wildcats erased a 5-1 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. EKU took a 6-5 lead in the sixth before UK shortstop Ryan Ritter ripped the game-winning, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Catcher Coltyn Kessler hit and first inning home run and finished with three RBIs.

Missouri dropped its third straight midweek game in a 13-8 loss at Kansas State. The Tigers gave up five runs in the first inning but cut the deficit to 5-4 with a four-run third inning. KSU quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth inning. First baseman Torin Montgomery and catcher Tre’ Morris both had two RBIs for the Tigers.

South Carolina jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held on for a 9-5 win over The Citadel at Founders Park. Centerfielder Brady Allen, second baseman Braylen Wimmer and shortstop Noah Myers all homered in the win. The trio accounted for all nine runs in the win. Wimmer belted a two-run homer in the second inning and Myers cracked a grand slam in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-0. Allen added a solo home run in the eighth inning. Gamecock starter Jack Mahoney turned in 7 2/3 scoreless innings in his longest outing of the season. He allowed five hits and struck out six for his third win of the season. In his last two midweek starts, Mahoney has hurled 12 2/3 scoreless innings and fanned 13 hitters. South Carolina reliever Jackson Phipps allowed five runs in the 1 1/3 in relief of Mahoney.

Tennessee dropped a 4-1 decision to Lipscomb in Knoxville. The Bisons scored three runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Third baseman Jake Rucker scored the Vols' only run of the game on a wild pitch in the first inning.
