Mississippi State pitchers combine for 20 strikeouts

Four Mississippi State pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts in a 4-1 win over Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.

Left hander Houston Harding drew the start on the mound and recorded nine strikeouts in five innings.

Then, a trio of relievers posted 11 strikeouts in four innings. Right-hander Preston Johnson pitched two innings and recorded six strikeouts. Right-hander Cam Tullar struck out two of the three batters he faced and right hander Stone Simmons fanned the side in the ninth inning.

MSU pitchers struck out 10 different Southern Miss batters. USM designated hitter Charlie Fischer was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. USM first baseman Christopher Sargent was 1-for-4 with three strikeouts. Five other USM hitters struck out twice.

Shamblin, Freeman dominate Troy

Alabama right handers Connor Shamblin and Will Freeman dominated Troy on the mound in a 9-1 win. The duo combined for eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter in the Crimson Tide’s 9-1 win. Troy shortstop Drew Frederic, who hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, was the only Troy batter to reach second base.

Shamblin allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings for the win. He struck out six batters. 

Freeman fired 3 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed only one hit for the save. He added two strikeouts.

Alabama second baseman Peyton Wilson hit a leadoff home run. Wilson hit a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning off Troy starter Kyle Gamble.

Wilson has hit three leadoff home runs this season against Jacksonville State, Wright State and Troy.

LSU wins two

LSU defeated Nicholls State and Southern in a day-night double header at Alex Box Stadium on Wednesday.

The Tigers hit six home runs in the two wins, giving the Tigers 19 home runs this season.

LSU right fielder Dylan Crews homered in both games for the Tigers. He hit a solo home run in the fifth inning against Nicholls State and added solo homer in the sixth inning against Southern.

Catcher Brody Drost hit a solo home run in the fourth inning against Nicholls.

LSU scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, highlighted by a pair of home runs, to defeat Southern 16-1. LSU hit four home runs in the nightcap. Right fielder Tre’ Morgan and second baseman Zach Arnold hit solo home runs in that one. Crews hit a solo home run and third baseman Jordan Thompson blasted a three-run homer in the six-run sixth inning.

Six-run second paces Alabama

Alabama rode a 6-run second inning to a 9-1 win over Troy at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Right fielder William Hamiter and DH Owen Diodati followed with back-to-back singles. Centerfielder Caden Rose reached on fielder’s choice to end the streak of seven straight hits. Shortstop Jim Jarvis capped the inning with an RBI single.

Ole Miss crushes Jackson State

Ole Miss scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 win over Jackson State. The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. Kevin Graham had a two-run single and Hayden Leatherwood added an RBI single in the inning.

Leatherwood paced the Ole Miss offense with three hits and two RBIs. Ole Miss had four players with at least two RBIs. Graham had three RBIs, while Tim ElkoCael Baker and Leatherwood all had two RBIs.

Tennessee tops Austin Peay

Tennessee scored all five runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 5-3 win at Austin Peay.

Shortstop Liam Spence started the scoring with an RBI single. Jake Rucker followed with a 2-run single to tie the game at 3-3. Left fielder Drew Gilbert snapped the tie with a sacrifice fly that scored Pete Derkay with the go-ahead run. UT catcher Jackson Greer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap the scoring.

Wildcats, Aggies rally for wins 

Kentucky and Texas A&M posted come-from-behind wins on Wednesday.

Kentucky scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Evansville 8-5. UK third baseman Ryan Church went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including the go-ahead two-run double in the seventh.

Texas A&M pushed home two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Incarnate Word 6-4. A&M centerfielder Ray Alejo stroked a 2-run single in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

The Aggies trailed 4-1 after two innings but rallied for the win.

Owls have their day 

The FAU Owls and Kennesaw State Owls both picked up wins over SEC teams on Wednesday.

In a battle of Top 25 teams, FAU defeated Florida 3-2 in 10 innings in Gainesville. 

FAU shortstop Wilfredo Alvarez scored all three runs in the win. FAU leftfielder Mitchell Hartigan had two RBIs in the win over the Gators. He drove in the winning run, scoring Alvarez from third base, with two outs in the top of the 10thinning. 

Alvarez started the game-winning rally with a one-out single to left field. After a fly out for the second out of the inning, FAU first baseman Nolan Schanuel reached on an error by Florida shortstop Josh Rivera to keep the inning alive. Hartigan stepped to plate and stroked a single to left to score Alvarez with the go-ahead run.

Florida made three errors in the loss to FAU.

FAU took 1-0 lead in the first inning on Hartigan’s sac fly that scored Alvarez.

Florida grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second inning when third baseman Colby Halter belted a 2-run home run.

The Owls tied the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Murray.

The game remained scoreless until the 10th inning when the Owls finally broke through with the winning run.

Florida left fielder Jacob Young had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 27 games, dating back to the 2019 NCAA tournament.

FAU relievers Hunter Cooley and Mike Entenza logged six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts against the Gators.

Florida used five relief pitchers in the game and allowed one unearned run in seven innings. The UF pen allowed four hits and struck out seven.

Kennesaw State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Georgia 6-4.

The Owls had three straight two-out hits to rally past the Bulldogs. Centerfielder Nick Carballo plated the first run with an RBI double. Shortstop Tyler Simon followed with an RBI triple and third baseman Jake Coro capped the rally with an RBI single.

Carballo was 2-for-2 with one double, one home run and four RBIs in the win for KSU.

Georgia led 4-2 entering the eighth inning. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the fourth.

Third baseman Garrett Blaylock hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give Georgia the 2-0 lead. 

Carballo’s 3-run homer gave the Owls a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame.

Left fielder Riley King and right fielder Conor Tate had RBI singles in the fourth to give Georgia a 4-3 lead.
