Chris Lee, Blake Lovell, and Blayne Gilmer preview the 2022 season for Tennessee football, including predictions, players to watch, expectations on offense and defense, and much more.
The Tennessee Volunteers are entering year two under head coach Josh Heupel in a much different situation than a year ago. In 2021 it was all about learning on the fly and building culture and momentum. The Vols certainly did that with Heupel's breakneck-paced offense. Once Hendon Hooker took over the starting job for UT, the 2021 team went on to set the all-time season single records for yards and points!
Tennessee returns top receiver Cedric Tillman and also a very talented running back in Jabari Small. In the past few days Tennesee has continued to add playmakers. Lyn-J Dixon, formerly of Clemson and West Virginia, has recently announced his commitment to UT out of the transfer portal. Dixon will be immediately eligible.
The defense in 2021 was the main problem. Tennessee was towards the very bottom of the SEC in its 3rd Down conversation rate allowed at 42.1% and also in yards allowed per game. Look for defenders like Tyler Baron and Byron Young to create more pressure up front this year. Jeremey Banks and Aaron Beasley also provide stability and leadership at linebacker.
