Auburn got unwanted news about Allen Flanigan, as its star guard underwent Achilles surgery recently.
Flanigan suffered a non-basketball injury and likely will not be able to return to the Tigers until early or mid December. This timetable slots him to return towards the end of the non-conference schedule to get some games under his belt before Auburn takes on Southeastern Conference competition.
Flanigan--the Tigers' second-leading scorer last season--was expected to be a big contributor for Bruce Pearl after starting all 27 games last year and averaging 14.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. Auburn was hoping to bounce back after a disappointing 2020-21 season and Flanigan was expected to have a big role in that.
Auburn will play in the Battle 4 Atlantis during Thanksgiving, which Flanigan would not be able to make. However, he could make key December games against Nebraska and Murray State before Auburn begins its difficult SEC season.
Pearl reassured fans that he believed Flanigan would do whatever he needed to get back to full strength and put himself in a position to help the team. Flanigan was a vital piece for Auburn after it lost Sharife Cooper last year, surpassing the 20-point mark in three of his last six games.
