Kentucky loses nose guard for 4-6 weeks

Marquan "Bully" McCall will miss the next month plus after suffering an injury against Florida.

Mark Stoops announced that Kentucky’s starting nose guard, Marquan McCall, will be out for 4-6 with a “lower extremity” injury. Known by the nickname “Bully”, McCall has helped anchor a Kentucky defense that has held opponents to just under 17 points per game and at about 284 yards per game.

The injury means McCall will return either for Kentucky’s game against Mississippi State or Vanderbilt. In the meantime, he will miss their game against LSU this weekend and critically, a trip to Athens in a few weeks where the Wildcats will take on SEC East favorites, Georgia.

Kentucky has started very well at 5-0, but without McCall, sophomore defensive tackles Justin Rogers and Josiah Hage will have to help hold down the defensive front.

In regards to Kentucky’s upcoming contest against LSU, the Tigers have struggled to run the ball season as last week they carried the ball 26 times for 11 yards. Their lacking running game allowed Auburn to drop nine in coverage for a majority of the third and fourth quarter which helped the Auburn defense hold LSU to only six points in the second half.

It will be interesting to see what a defensive coach like Mark Stoops will do this Saturday. Will he have to commit more defenders to keep LSU from running the ball without McCall, or will he be able to sit back in coverage to slow down LSU’s potent wide receiving corps?
