South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said this week that he's not decided on a starting quarterback, leaving hints that it might be a three-man race.

“Today, tomorrow and Thursday will be critical practices and we’ll have a better idea of how things will shake out towards the end of the week as we get through these next few practices with our current quarterbacks and see what Luke’s situation is as well," Beamer said on Tuesday.

August practices have certainly taken turns that Beamer wouldn't have preferred.

Presumed starter Luke Doty is still hurt, though it may not be as severe as feared. Still, Carolina had enough uncertainty that it put a jersey on grad assistant Zeb Noland and threw him into the mix.

St. Francis (Penn.) transfer Jason Brown still appears to be under consideration, while Colten Gauthier is another scholarship option on the roster.

The Gamecocks went 2-8 last year, with Doty (43-of-71 passing, 405 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions) serving as the team's returning leader in terms of experience at the position.

Carolina opens with Eastern Illinois on Sept. 4.
